AlikeList

Way back in August ’09 when AlikeList was in it’s toddler phase, co-founder Jim Delli Santi wrote a blog post explaining AlikeList’s mission when it was founded. He lamented that he and the other co-founders always had a hard time finding good local restaurants, doctors, auto mechanics – you name it – online.

All three of us agreed that today’s local offerings were falling short of making life simpler… It’s easy to get overwhelmed with too much information, too many local choices and too many reviews to read from people we don’t know or trust.

We set out to build AlikeList, a place where like-minded individuals and groups of people can share and find trusted local recommendations through word-of-mouth. Just like they do offline, only better because we make these local recommendations searchable, available 24 x 7, and accessible from anywhere.

Now, six months later, the AlikeList staff is finding trusted local businesses through AlikeList almost every day. Since most staff members are friends with each other on alikelist.com, we each have at least 30 AlikeList friends. That creates an incredibly valuable database of recommendations from

Mission Ranch in Carmel, CA

people we actually trust. No more sifting through reviews or random business listings for us!

With the constant chaos of a start-up, and the coming and going of off-site employees, we can all truly see and experience the value of AlikeList.

Take Jeff, our Director of Business Operations, for example. He was in need of two new mattresses for his growing daughters. He looked on AlikeList and saw that our Director of Social Marketing was a friend of Jim, the manager at Mancini’s Sleepworld in Saratoga, CA and highly recommended the store. So Jeff put it on his TryList, and on the same day went into the store and got a great deal on two top-notch mattresses – for two happy daughters at home.

Last weekend, I was heading down to Carmel, CA and on Friday afternoon, realized I didn’t have a clue what to do there. I sent out an Ask to 15 people, asking them to recommend a good place to get a drink. Within an hour, I had 10 responses. One of the best ones said to get a drink at Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch, on the back deck, during sunset if possible. That kind of recommendation would have taken me hours of researching online to find – and even then I wouldn’t have trusted it because it would have come from a complete stranger.

For the AlikeList staff, it’s really nice to know that whenever we need anything local – a restaurant, chiropractor, auto mechanic – we know exactly where to look. We don’t even have to bother asking one another, which is good because we’re always so busy! (In fact, I should get back to work…)

Today AlikeList broke the sound barrier. Or at least it feels like we did. We’ve been working around the clock (literally) for the past few months redesigning the site interface, adding ProSites for business owners, and simplifying search and share capabilities. Let me break it down for you:

- More user-friendly interface: Think “iTunes playlist meets AlikeList.” Easily create custom LikeLists for different uses (e.g., Fix It List, Sushi List, even “PlayList” for your favorite playgrounds perhaps) that contain narrowly categorized businesses based on any criteria you dream of.

Marissa's- ProSites: Short for “Promotional Sites,” ProSites are free mini- sites where businesses add and update helpful information about their business – all they have to do is claim their listing. And that’s not all! Businesses can also create Instant Offers and messages for customers, monitor current and prospective client bases, and more.

- Community Home Pages: Your current home page on steroids! Now you can see the most-Liked and newly-Liked businesses where you live or work, in real-time, to help you stay in-the-know!

- Easier Search by Category & Sort buttons so you find exactly what you’re looking for – quickly.Happening Now

Bottom line:

AlikeList is easier yet more useful than ever. Now you can find, save, share and organize your Likes with ease. Plus, more businesses claiming their ProSites means more information and special deals for you!

We hope you like it and invite all your friends to AlikeList, —the more friends you have, the more trusted business recommendations you’ll get.

BTW, since we’ve added a lot of new functions, please don’t hesitate to share your feedback with us at feedback@alikelist.com.

Michael McConachie (COO and Co-founder) tells the story of how he and Jim Delli Santi (CEO and Co-founder) first came up with idea of AlikeList in the winter of 2006.

For my family, vacations are an exercise in exploration. We love to go on adventures and try new places, and our winter vacation in 2006 was no different. We were visiting my parents in Phoenix, AZ and wanted to take a few days with the kids to go someplace new.

The Enchantment Resort nestled in the Sedona Canyon.

The Enchantment Resort nestled in the Sedona canyon.

I had called my friend Jim Delli Santi who I knew had spent some time in the Phoenix area recently and he recommended the Enchantment Resort in Sedona. The suggestion fit the bill for our family perfectly: the Enchantment Resort offers a cool par-3 golf course, helicopter tours(the concierge suggested Maverick Airstar) and the many quaint shops in Sedona. Something for everyone.

We’re checking out Sedona one afternoon and I realize I had not made dinner reservations for that evening. We’re in the mood for American-style food at a nice restaurant, but one that isn’t too upscale (our sons hate upscale restaurants). So I call Jim again and ask him for a restaurant recommendation. Jim immediately comes up with the perfect recommendation – Rene at Tlaquepaque. Nice restaurant, French and American cuisine and family friendly.

Jim and I begin to talk about the process of getting recommendations from those we trust and realize how valuable it would be if recommendations from trusted friends were online and accessible 24×7. Better yet would be if they were accessible from your computer and mobile devices while you travel. Additionally, what if we could connect with businesses to make a reservation, and they could contact us too? And what if we could easily refer our favorite businesses to our friends? The possibilities just kept coming.

It also dawned on me that my entire trip had been planned via trusted word-of-mouth recommendations. Referrals from my parents, the concierge at the hotel and Jim. At that moment our mission was clear: we had to help people get trusted recommendations anywhere at anytime.

AlikeList is proud to announce a partnership with DonorsChoose.org — an organization that 1 out of 3 US schools has used to raise much-needed funds. In the spirit of the gift-giving season, let’s give back to our local schools (we know they need it!)

When you receive your GivingCard from DonorsChoose.org, you’ll be able to select a local school project to help fund — in  your name! And unless you specify anonymity, your contribution will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to encourage your friends to join too!

GivingCard-Kids image

It’s simple:

  1. 1. Join AlikeList at http://www.alikelist.com/givingcard1
  2. 2. Build a Like List with 20 of your favorite local businesses across 5 different categories (e.g. dentists, hair salons, auto mechanics, restaurants etc.)
  3. 3. Recruit 10 of your friends to join AlikeList and connect with you. Use the “invite friends” link on the top of your home page. (Since not everyone you invite will join, we suggest you invite at least 20-25 friends to start.)

Once we verify the completion of your participation, we’ll email you a $20 GivingCard to help fund a project at one of the thousands of under-funded schools on DonorsChoose.org. It’s not every day that you can donate to your local schools for free! How could you say no?

If you want to spread the word, please feel free to share this post on Facebook, Twitter or on your own blog! The program ends at Midnight PST on Dec. 31, 2009.

Note: This promotion is limited to people who aren’t already AlikeList users. AlikeList is built on the trust between friends & colleagues. We hope that you honor that by adding businesses that are truly your favorites, and that you get real-life friends to join AlikeList.
Giving Cards will be sent out in batches once a week, usually on Thursdays.

In an earlier post, my partner Jim Delli Santi describes the concept behind AlikeList, “we’re like word of mouth recommendations but better because we’re accessible anytime, anywhere—and you don’t even need the mouth!”  The core concept is simple:  Let like-minded friends post their lists of favorites, and let them share the lists with each other, even with friends of friends.

1) Save all of your most liked businesses, services and professionals in one place to be quickly accessible and viewed anytime.

2) Easily share your most liked businesses with all of your friends, relatives and colleagues and they can share their lists with you in turn.

3) Find businesses ranked by personal relevance, e.g. how many of your friends like them, how many friends of friends like them and how many AlikeList members like them –it’s like Google but with ranking based on people’s preferences, instead of clicks.

4) Quickly get trusted recommendations from members and even friends beyond the AlikeList network.

5) Instantly share great businesses that you like or just found with a Share alert sent to your friends.

6) View members’ brief but helpful comments and tips about businesses you’re searching for. It’s a feature that’ll come in handy if you choose to do business with them.

7) Save time. It only takes seconds to do all of the above, which is remarkable when compared to the amount of time I usually spend doing the same thing at online directories, search sites or review  & rating sites.

I’m working on something that will help simplify and improve my life, and lives of others I care about too—and I feel pretty good about that!

Hello World!

AlikeList was started with the goal of helping you get quick, personal recommendations for life’s daily demands. Whether you’re looking for a great lunch spot to take a client or dine with a girlfriend, need a plumber to fix the kitchen sink, or get a massage to unwind after a long day, AlikeList is the destination for all your answers. No need to search endlessly in the wrong place, read mountains of reviews or figure out who to call for help. Your trusted friends and recommendations are now always available, the details just a click away.

We’re in the process of launching our corporate blog to not only help you leverage AlikeList more effectively but also to provide you with a sounding board to share your welcomed feedback and ideas. This is the first of many steps in that direction.

So if you’re looking for an information source about AlikeList with updates on upcoming product features, milestones, and events or if you’d just like to hear about all the fun stuff associated with AlikeList, you’ve come to the right place. We consider your feedback an integral part of this ongoing conversation, so feel free to share your thoughts (and recommendations) on how we could make this blog more useful and informative to you.
