Michael McConachie (COO and Co-founder) tells the story of how he and Jim Delli Santi (CEO and Co-founder) first came up with idea of AlikeList in the winter of 2006.

For my family, vacations are an exercise in exploration. We love to go on adventures and try new places, and our winter vacation in 2006 was no different. We were visiting my parents in Phoenix, AZ and wanted to take a few days with the kids to go someplace new.

The Enchantment Resort nestled in the Sedona Canyon.

The Enchantment Resort nestled in the Sedona canyon.

I had called my friend Jim Delli Santi who I knew had spent some time in the Phoenix area recently and he recommended the Enchantment Resort in Sedona. The suggestion fit the bill for our family perfectly: the Enchantment Resort offers a cool par-3 golf course, helicopter tours(the concierge suggested Maverick Airstar) and the many quaint shops in Sedona. Something for everyone.

We’re checking out Sedona one afternoon and I realize I had not made dinner reservations for that evening. We’re in the mood for American-style food at a nice restaurant, but one that isn’t too upscale (our sons hate upscale restaurants). So I call Jim again and ask him for a restaurant recommendation. Jim immediately comes up with the perfect recommendation – Rene at Tlaquepaque. Nice restaurant, French and American cuisine and family friendly.

Jim and I begin to talk about the process of getting recommendations from those we trust and realize how valuable it would be if recommendations from trusted friends were online and accessible 24×7. Better yet would be if they were accessible from your computer and mobile devices while you travel. Additionally, what if we could connect with businesses to make a reservation, and they could contact us too? And what if we could easily refer our favorite businesses to our friends? The possibilities just kept coming.

It also dawned on me that my entire trip had been planned via trusted word-of-mouth recommendations. Referrals from my parents, the concierge at the hotel and Jim. At that moment our mission was clear: we had to help people get trusted recommendations anywhere at anytime.

We started AlikeList to make it easier to help your friends and to get help from your friends.  It is a simple idea that can mean saving time, saving money and sometimes saving your health.  A very personal example comes to mind.  I live in Chicago and with AlikeList in full swing, have been spending time in Sunnyvale, CA.  I had a minor shoulder injury and needed to find a physician near Sunnyvale.  A search of physicians in the area turned up four recommendations from my trusted friends and associates……in roughly 30 seconds!  This is the power of AlikeList.  Solving those daily problems life throws in your direction.  The right businesses, in one place, available at the right time.  Friends helping Friends.

The Beta launch of AlikeList is the culmination of years of developing a business model focused on solving life’s challenges for consumers and providing real value to local businesses.  This initiative has required the effort and generosity of a significant number of people.  My partners, Rob and Jim, who put aside other gainful employment to take a chance on an idea.   Our families who forgive our absences and provide the support, without which, building the business would be impossible.  Our family at AlikeList who have put AlikeList at the forefront of their lives and done an absolutely outstanding job.  Our investors who believed in our vision and provided the capital to get us off the ground.  Out beta testers and community A-Listers who volunteer the time to make AlikeList a success.  And many, many more business partners, friends and organizations to numerous to name.  No business can succeed without this network of friends and we will be eternally grateful to them.

In the end, this is what AlikeList is all about.  That great feeling we get by helping those who need a hand.  Creating Like Lists to share with Friends and associates.  I hope you enjoy AlikeList!

Michael, Rob and I came together because of our shared vision that consumers are long overdue for a local online service that simplifies Life.

We all know local living can be difficult sometimes.  Life is coming at us on a daily basis and sometimes these local needs can overwhelm us.  In any given day your car may need repair, your roof needs replacing, your father slips and injures his foot, your son or daughter develops an unusual allergy that requires immediate attention, or you want to find a great restaurant for a meeting or date.  The task of finding a local business can be daunting at times. And with today’s economic climate, finding businesses we can trust is even more important to reducing the complexity of daily life.

All three of us agreed that today’s local offerings were falling short of making life simpler. We were always searching, rarely finding.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed with too much information, too many local choices and too many reviews to read from people we don’t know or trust.  We heard that our friends spend a lot of time reviewing the reviewers just to see if they relate to the person making the local recommendation.  And sometimes we were forced to wade through question after question from local online services in order to request service from a local business and then were told we’d have to wait 24 hours to be contacted.  That’s not much help when you sink is clogged or your kitchen is flooded.

So how could we make it simpler to find a trusted local business?

We rallied around a simple idea; Local-Social.  What if I could find the local businesses my friends actually use, in 30 seconds or less? What if in 3 clicks, I could find a highly recommended orthopedic surgeon for my father, or a trusted pediatrician for my children or a romantic restaurant that will be liked for a very special someone?  Anytime, anywhere for almost anything?  That seemed like an idea worth pursuing in today’s busy times when life is so complicated.   It was clear to us that word-of-mouth was critical.  In countless conversations with local consumers, we heard the same thing:  Word-of-mouth was the preferred method to finding local businesses.  And in speaking with local business owners, they all said the same thing, a significant majority of their customers came from word-of-mouth referrals.

So we set out to build AlikeList, a place where like-minded individuals and groups of people can share and find trusted local recommendations through word-of-mouth.  Just like they do offline, only better because we make these local recommendations searchable, available 24 x 7, and accessible from anywhere.  And we wanted to make it possible to vary the level of social trust when finding local recommendations. From tighter connections for important choices like a family doctor, to looser connections for fun choices like a restaurant or bar.  We wanted to create a local online service that helps us solve life’s daily opportunities.

Now Michael traveling to Sedona, Arizona or to Lake Tahoe, can find a restaurant, a resort or even a rental property service by accessing all of his friends’ local recommendations easily and quickly.   And my wife can find my sister-in-law’s trusted pediatrician. With AlikeList, anyone can now find targeted local recommendations from their trusted friends and colleagues in 30 seconds or less.  Less searching, more finding.

After all like-minded people do flock together.  At AlikeList they can help each other too, anytime, anywhere, for anything.

Hello World!

AlikeList was started with the goal of helping you get quick, personal recommendations for life’s daily demands. Whether you’re looking for a great lunch spot to take a client or dine with a girlfriend, need a plumber to fix the kitchen sink, or get a massage to unwind after a long day, AlikeList is the destination for all your answers. No need to search endlessly in the wrong place, read mountains of reviews or figure out who to call for help. Your trusted friends and recommendations are now always available, the details just a click away.

We’re in the process of launching our corporate blog to not only help you leverage AlikeList more effectively but also to provide you with a sounding board to share your welcomed feedback and ideas. This is the first of many steps in that direction.

So if you’re looking for an information source about AlikeList with updates on upcoming product features, milestones, and events or if you’d just like to hear about all the fun stuff associated with AlikeList, you’ve come to the right place. We consider your feedback an integral part of this ongoing conversation, so feel free to share your thoughts (and recommendations) on how we could make this blog more useful and informative to you.
